It’s strange how different the credentialing is for different professions. As an engineer its a two day test which you can take in the same year or several years apart, but only after four years in the job. I didn’t study more than an hour or two and both tests allowed me to bring as many text and reference books as I could carry. On the other hand my MD son has four years of residency before he’s considered qualified. And lawyers are somewhere in the middle, kind of like accountants. I think the driving forcee behind credentialing is the attempt to constrain the supply of professionals to keep the pay as high as possible. It didn’t really work for engineers because most engineering jobs do not require a professional license. We’d have been smarter to have copied attorneys.

Absolutely – the Bar is just a way to crowd out competition. I’m not sure it’s ultimately worth it though, especially as lawyers leave the profession in droves….
